A man from South Carolina has been sentenced to two years in federal prison following a case that charged him with conspiracy to traffic in and sale of controlled substances.
According to court documents, Thomas Smith, 38, of Columbia, passed on $1,722,000 in illegal drugs to a friend, and then sold them to an unknown number of customers.
According to the documents, Smith and two other individuals --itzerland, where he was arrested last September -- obtained and mailed counterfeit drugs, including Viagra.
On July 18, 2010, Smith pleaded guilty in federal court in Columbia, where he was sentenced to a year in prison. He admitted he was a convicted felon in possession of controlled- substance drugs in 2011.
Smith, who was arrested and jailed on February 1, 2015, pleaded guilty to the charges.
A federal grand jury returned a two-day investigation into the charges.
According to the charges, Smith had provided to an unknown number of people the names of Viagra, Eli Lilly's erectile dysfunction drug, and Eli Lilly's generic Viagra.
Smith was arrested in June 2010 in Columbia, and in January 2011, Smith was arrested in the same state.
Smith was released on bond and has been in federal custody since February 1, 2015.
